They were shutting down Entriss Online, and Ian had no way to stop them. The game was his life — by day, as one of their lead developers; by night, gaming as the accomplished Mandorf the Wizard. After years of leveling up, both professionally and personally, everything he had worked for was going to end. His goggles-and-gloves virtual reality MMORPG was being replaced with Everyworld Online, a next-gen game that provided full immersion so players could experience a world that looks and feels real.

After stumbling on an unknown quest that kills anyone who approaches, Ian discovers an enormous amount of orphaned code that had never made it into the game. Moments before being fired, he checks in the code, enabling The Left Hand of God quest chain, an unexpected world event, and the frightening reality of a fully immersive Entriss Online.

Q&A in the Asylum
Welcome to the Asylum, David! Take a seat by the fire, have a glass of beverage of your choice and tell me something about yourself!

David puffs on a cigar and stares intently. “Thank you for having me.” He toasts with a glass of Devil’s Share bourbon before taking a long draw.

What inspires your writing? Do you listen to music, stare into the fire, listen to the whispering of the wind, make deals with the Devil?

“I have often said that writers are vampires who live off the emotions of our readers.” David stands and paces the room with his arms behind his back. “There is a certain kind of magic that happens when you can use words to make someone laugh out loud, curse in frustration, or shed a tear.” He stops to look out the window. “Wielding that delicious power is… inspiring.”

Describe an asylum set in the world of your book, Entriss Online!

David’s face tightens. “There is a place between our world and Entriss, an empty void that goes on forever. Players passing through, from one world to the next, would mistake it for a blink. What if they didn’t pass through? What if they couldn’t leave the void?” He takes a deep breath and speaks quietly. “Their asylum would be the one in their mind.”

Your MC is locked in an asylum. What did he/she do to end up there?

“Ian lives two lives, as a software developer and a wizard. When he’s not coding for Entriss Online, he’s fighting monsters in a virtual world. When they announce that Entriss is shutting down, it means they were destroying both lives. What would that do to a person? How far would he go to save a game?” David raises an eyebrow and smiles. “Maybe, far enough to end up in an asylum.”

Which fictional character (it can be one of yours) and/or author would you like to live with in an asylum and why?

“I would take Luanne from Entriss Online. Her heart is black, her soul is empty, and she would not last long.” David looks off into the distance. “Watching such a person slip into madness would make my own time at the asylum… entertaining.”

While you are locked in here for eternity, we will allow you one book – what would you choose?

“Why, I would bring my copy of Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, of course.” David finishes his drink and sets the glass on the table. “Now, I must go and decide the fate of several unfortunate souls.”

Well then, we hope you’ll enjoy your stay in the Asylum! Any last words?

“Thank you for having me. I look forward to seeing you in the pages of my books. Bring fresh emotions, I have need of them.”

*locks door*

David lets out a sinister laugh. There is a flash of light behind the door, followed by thunder that shakes the hallway. When the moment passes, the laughter is gone, and the asylum is deathly quiet.
